How To Create Merch & Uniforms

Step 2. Selecting The Right Products

The Buying Process Explained

The Goal of This Step 🎯

From Step 1: Defining Your Brand, we now have clarity on:

  • Who your brand is
  • Who you’re talking to
  • What your merch & uniforms need to communicate

Step 2 is where strategy meets reality.

Your task now is to choose from over 5,000 products that best communicate your brand.

At this stage, we’re balancing your brand intent against very real constraints:

  • Budget
  • Timelines
  • Sizing
  • Materials
  • Logistics

This is where good decisions are made & bad ones avoided.

The Constraints Are Our Friends 👫

On paper unlimited choice sounds exciting. 🤩
In practice, it usually leads to:

  • Decision paralysis
  • Second guessing
  • Overthinking things that don’t matter

Our first job is to narrow the field. Constraints aren’t limitations, they’re filters.
They turn chaos into clarity. Think of them as your sorting hat when browsing the catalogue.

The Key Constraints:

  • ⏰ Timeframes
  • 💰 Budget
  • 🛠 Product Function
  • 🎨 Size & Colour availability
  • 👥 Staff Requirements
  • 📋 Admin & Logistics

When Do You Need It By? ⏳

Do you have a hard deadline?

  • A conference?
  • A photoshoot?
  • A launch?
  • An event where showing up empty handed would be awkward?

🚨 If yes, this is the very first thing to tell us (after the usual pleasantries, of course).

We don’t break promises, so we’ll work backwards to determine:

  • Suitable products
  • Appropriate branding methods
  • Production & shipping options

The good news? Most people don’t actually have a hard deadline, they just don’t like waiting.

We get it. That’s why we only have one speed at House of Uniforms: as fast as we can. 💨

How Much Will it Cost? 💸

Set a budget:

  • Per garment
  • Per staff member
  • Or overall

There’s no prize for being vague here. 😵💫

Telling us your realistic budget helps us recommend products that make you look good without blowing it.

For almost every look or vibe, there are multiple ways to achieve it across different price points. That’s where experience matters.

A few blunt, but true reminders:

  • “Cheap is expensive.”
  • “Buy nice or buy twice.”
  • “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.”
  • “Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.”
  • "The bitterness of poor quality remains ling after the sweetness of low price is forgotten".

We’re here to help you choose wisely.

How & Where Will the Products Be Used? 🏗️🌦️🏢

Once the strategy talk is done, the work still has to happen.

At best, uniforms should support workflow. They should never get in the way.

Start with the basics:

  • Indoors or outdoors?
  • High vis required?
  • Stretch for movement?
  • Breathability?
  • Weather exposure?

Function always comes first.

Also check:

  • Industry standards
  • Club or association rules
  • Safety or compliance requirements

(Fun Fact : lawn bowls & basketball often have stricter dress codes than construction sites.)

For Merch (Not Uniforms)

If you’re creating merch to build your brand, aim for something people will:

  • Keep
  • Use
  • Reach for naturally

The holy grail? 🙏 Something they would have bought anyway.

And a quick reality check : Uniforms are not superhero suits 🦹♀️

If it’s 45°C outside & you're working outdoors, nothing will make you cold, but the right gear will stop you from getting sunburnt & being miserable.

Who Will Be Using The Products? 👕

This part is often underestimated & then regretted later.

Sizing

People come in many shapes and sizes. That’s why many of our ranges start at size 4 & go up to size 30 (or XXS to 13XL).

Fits

Do you really need:

  • Slim
  • Modern
  • Classic
  • Oversized
  • Relaxed
  • Cropped
  • Wide-leg
  • Petite
  • Stout

(Yes, all of these exist. No, one fit does not suit everyone.)

Product Coordination

Do you need:

  • Matching men’s & women's styles?
  • Unisex options?
  • A mix of similar styles to suit different bodies?

Intra-Business Differentiation

Do different teams with the business need different looks?

  • Warehouse vs front office
  • Trades vs quoting roles
  • Events vs day to day

Sometimes this means completely different outfits. Sometimes it’s just colour, accessories or layering.

The Admin Factors 📦

This is the unglamorous stuff, but it matters.

Garment Quantities 🧮

A good rule of thumb: one top for each day worked per week, per person.

Frequency 🔄

  • One off event?
  • Ongoing uniforms?
  • Seasonal top ups?

Payment 💵

  • Company funded?
  • Staff purchased?
  • A mix of both?

Logistics 📦

  • Individually packed per person?
  • One delivery or 50 locations?
  • Multiple sites or one HQ?

Spare Uniforms

Consider keeping extras for:

  • New hires
  • Temporary staff
  • Wear & tear
  • Damage on the job
  • Visitors

Especially important in OH&S heavy industries where spare hi vis, safety gear & PPE are often required.

Does It Have Your Name On It? 🧵🖨️

This is where products & branding collide.

Sometimes we:

  • Choose products to suit a branding method
  • Choose a branding method to suit a product
  • Or adjust both

For example:

  • DTG printing doesn’t work on polyester but DTF printing does
  • Embroidery works on rain jackets but it may compromise waterproofing

These are the trade offs that we help you navigate.

Which brings us to the final step.
