Direct to Garment or DTG printing is the next evolution in garment printing technology. Similar in look & feel to traditional screen printing but without some of the limitations like costly setups & colour restrictions.
The DTG ink soaks into the fabric to provide a soft texture & matt finish.
Ink coverage on dark or black garments, much like screen printing, will not be 100% opaque which gives DTG printing a more "worn in" look. Giving your garment the appearance of already being your absolute favourite straight out of the bag!
Pros :
- feels softer & looks more like a traditional screen print
- ideal for short print runs
- ideal for artwork with lots of colours or fine detail
- uses water based inks
- less costly setup fees compared to screen printing
Cons :
- print will fade with washing over time (just like a screen print)
- can not match specific Pantone colours
- coarse fabrics will produce variations in print output due to fabric texture
- can only be used on garments - not suitable for caps / beanies
Best for :
- 100% cotton fabric
- smooth fabrics like cotton jersey & not pique knit
- cotton based garments like Tees, Polo Shirts, Hoodies, Jumpers
- short runs
Please keep in mind DTG is a multi-step print process involving several machines. It is likely when you receive your garments that they may have a "bruise" around the print area & in some instances the print may feel "sticky". This is caused by the pre & post treatment process. This is totally normal. After the first wash the bruise will reduce & in most cases disappear. Any residual "stickiness" will disappear after the first wash.
